Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez and his Uruguay team-mates have had their appeals over bans for their involvement in a brawl with fans rejected.

The Supreme Court of Sport has rejected an appeal by five Uruguayan footballers against bans imposed after they clashed with fans following their loss to Colombia in the semi-finals of the Copa America in North Carolina in July 2024, dismissing claims that they acted in self-defense and to protect their families.

Players clash with fans in the stands at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte after the team lost 1-0.

Spurs midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur and Napoli defender Matias Oliveira were also involve and were subsequently ban.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport said on Tuesday that its judges had dismissed an appeal by the players and the Uruguayan Football Federation.

“The jury found in this case that the principle of self-defense could not be invoke and that the player’s conduct amount to a willing and unreasonable act of violence,” the court said in a statement.

Nunez will be suspend when Uruguay return to World Cup qualifying, away to Paraguay on June 5 and hosting Venezuela five days later.

The appeal aims to overturn the bans and fines imposed on the player and the Uruguayan Football Federation, or to have the punishments reduced.
